The National Association of Colleges and Employers released an analysis from a study conducted on 508,665 nursing school new graduates. The analysis reported what percentage of bachelor’s level nursing graduates found full-time employment after 4-6 months. What the results made evident was that only 55.3% of the new grads found full-time work as a nurse nearly half a year post graduation. 

In spite of reports of critical nursing shortages, nurses burning out and leaving the bedside, and many other nurses nearing their retirement date, a not insignificant percentage of nursing new grads continue to find difficulty landing employment. The silver lining on the horizon to this challenging situation just might be AI, artificial intelligence, technology becoming prevalent and accessible more than ever before.

In this article, I’ll show you 7 ways that AI can be used to help you land your dream nursing job. It might not have previously occurred to you that by using job search engines online, you are already utilizing AI! Popular AI-powered job search engines like Indeed and LinkedIn use algorithms to match job seekers with relevant job openings. Nurses like yourself can use these platforms to find employment opportunities that match your skills and experience. Indeed and LinkedIn are even becoming more and more socially adept and user friendly for better networking and career opportunities. 

2. Optimize your resume with AI

There are a few ways to use AI to help you improve your resume and its impact on your budding nursing career. For example, AI-powered resume optimization tools like Jobscan can help nurses tailor their resume to the job description, ensuring that their application stands out to recruiters. 

There are also free options out there to help you create a resume with ease. One example of how you can easily generate a relevant and detailed job resume is to simply ask ChatGTP to come up with a resume for you. The trick that will help you generate an exceptional resume in contrast with a vague and non-specific resume is to make sure you are asking the right questions.

How to generate a custom nursing resume using ChatGTP

as you can see from the image below, i start off by asking chatgtp to get to know me better. i first request that chatgtp ask me about what it thinks the 5 most pertinent questions are in order for it to generate me a the best resume possible. you can always change the number of questions so that chatgtp can ask you more or less questions–in this case, i think 5-10 would be appropriate.

next you will see that chatgtp has made me a list of the top 5 questions that it thinks are necessary to best generate my resume.

in this next image, you can see that i answered all of the questions. I kept my answer brief for the purpose of the example, but you can elaborate more to give chatgtp more to work with. the better you answer the questions, the better the result. even with the bare minimum i input, i felt like chatgtp generated a decent enough end result.

in the following image, you can see that chatgtp even asked for clarification about some of the answers i provided to its interview questions.

i proceed to answer the clarification questions that chatgtp inquired about in order to best generate my resume.

now in this slide, chatgtp again asks for a more detailed clarification for one of the answer that i answered too vaguely.

I just quickly typed in the responses and made the hypothetical scenario up with fake work history for jane doe which i did not care to elaborate on so i simply stated that i had no more relevant information to provide.

here is the final result: the reume that chatgtp drafted me was pretty decent considering how fast the entire process was, no more than about 5 minutes! now i can simply copy the text and paste it onto a word document or a canva template so it looks more presentable. and thats how you streamline your way to a successful nursing career! i hope it helps.  ♡

3. prepare for your job interview With AI

If you were able to successfully apply for your dream nursing job, first of all, congratulations! You probably are in the process of preparing for your job interview and wondering if there is a way to be better prepared. For this purpose, I actually found myself going back to ChatGTP and created a prompt that could be really helpful for you. 

I once again created a prompt that you can tailor to your own needs.  Basically, I asked ChatGTP to provide me with the top 10 likely interview questions I might encounter while interviewing for a hypothetical job interview at an emergency room for a position as a registered nurse and the best response I should give to give me the best chance of being hired. I was pleasantly surprised with how similar the questions seemed to the questions I have previously encountered when I was applying for employment as a registered nurse in the past. I was actually blown away with the quality of the sample interview question responses.

Use this prompt in ChatGTP to help you prepare for your nursing job interview.

as you can see in the image below, i informed chatgtp that i would be interviewing for a new grad job in the emergency room at a hospital as a registered nurse. i asked that chatgtp generate 10 potential interview questions i might encounter on “my” interview and provide me with the best responses i could give to the interview questions to have the best chance of being hired. the responses i received really blew me away! in order to tailor this prompt to your specific situation, simply change out the details.

4. Participate in online job fairs

Some hospitals host virtual job fairs, which allow nurses to connect with recruiters and learn more about available positions. Nurses can use AI-powered platforms like Brazen to participate in these events and network with recruiters. Crystal can give you a competitive edge over other employment candidates when drafting emails, texts, and other communications with recruiters, nurse and healthcare professionals and other members of leadership who might be able to help you get where you want to go in your nursing career. 

6. Use AI-powered language learning tools: 

Nurses who speak multiple languages may have an advantage in the job market. Bilingual nurses can help provide safe and effective care through improved communication with patients from various cultural backgrounds and may be more favorable than using a video or telephone interpreter. If you have ever considered learning a second or third language, AI-powered language learning tools like Duolingo can help nurses improve their language skills and increase their appeal to potential employers. Duolingo has even recently paired up with ChatGTP to provide a more intuitive and interactive learning experience. 

7. Use AI-powered training tools

AI-powered training tools like clinical simulators can help new grad nurses continue to develop their clinical skills through realistic simulations. There are various AI-driven simulators that can keep your nursing skills sharp while you are transitioning from a nursing school new graduate to an employed registered nurse. One example of an AI clinical nursing simulator is the Oxford Medical Simulation that operates with an Oculus VR headset.

New nurses can also use companies like SIMmersion.com to offer a virtual, AI driven interview simulation. The simulation can help you get the feel for a job hiring process and go through a hiring scenario with a hypothetical company. It might not be the same as going through the actual interview process in reality, but it could give some perspective and offer a little insight to what to expect.
